Big Picture Month shifts the focus from how to organize your digital life to why it matters in the first place.
Knowing why helps you decide whether something truly deserves your time and energy.
Big Picture Week 1: Pain Points
Most people who care about digital organization do so because something about their digital life bothers them.
Maybe it's a problem you encounter every day.
Maybe it's a vague but persistent stress that only rises to the surface now and then.
Maybe you know exactly how to fix it but don't have the time.
Maybe you don't even know where to start.
Each of us has different challenges, concerns, goals, and abilities. Some problems are common—too much email, too many photos, too many devices or apps—but even those shared problems can mean very different things depending on the person.
Technology and data should ultimately add value to life. So before trying to fix anything, it helps to identify where they are doing the opposite.
Take a few minutes to consider questions like these:
- What devices or apps consistently frustrate you?
- What digital mess makes you throw your hands up in exasperation?
- What parts of your smartphone or computer would you rather ignore than deal with?
- What problems do you wish you could eliminate instantly?
The point here is not to solve anything yet. It is simply to notice where the pain is.
Write it down somewhere. A list is enough.
If this feels a little negative, don't worry. Identifying the source of your pain is one of the best ways to direct your time and attention toward the work that will actually help instead of work that merely feels productive.
